PRINEVILLE, Ore. (Jan. 7, 2009) — Les Schwab Tire Centers Inc. is laying off 65 employees in Prineville and said 27 of those jobs have been eliminated permanently.
A spokeswoman for the Bend, Ore.-based dealership told Tire Business that Les Schwab intends to hire the rest back “when the economy improves.” The 27 permanent layoffs were at the distribution center, and the rest were in the company's transport, equipment, production and adjustment divisions, she said.
About 600 employees remain in Prineville. The company employs 7,700 total.
Les Schwab relocated its headquarters and more than 300 employees last month to a 123,000-sq.-ft. building in Bend from Prineville but left some employees behind to work in non-corporate operations. No layoffs have impacted the headquarters, the spokeswoman said.
Jodi Hueske, vice president of human resources, told local media Jan. 5 that Les Schwab is selling fewer tires and shipping fewer tires to the company's stores.
The dealership, North America's third largest, posted sales of $1.33 billion in 2007 and has more than 350 company-owned stores and 74 associate stores.
