LAS VEGAS (Nov. 4, 2008) – Continental Tire North America Inc. and Pirelli Tire North America are launching all-season versions of their ExtremeContact and P Zero Nero ultra-high-performance (UHP) tire lines, respectively, jumping into a still-new niche in the North American replacement tire market.
Neither company was able to provide an estimate as to the size of the niche, but both pointed to growing consumer demand for all-season performance and increased treadlife in the UHP sector.
Conti's tire, the ExtremeContact DWS, is part of a new family of tires designed for the North American market that includes the ExtremeContact DW and the ExtremeWinterContact.
Conti will start rolling out the ExtremeContact DWS – the DWS stands for dry, wet and snow — in the second quarter of 2009. The line, designed for the aftermarket only, eventually will comprise 89 sizes in rim diameters from 16 – 24 inches. Conti will offer a 50,000-mile limited treadlife warranty, a 60-day customer satisfaction ride guarantee, a manufacturer's workmanship limited warranty for 72 months – with free replacement up to 12 months — and road hazard coverage for 12 months.
The ExtremeContact DWS features an asymmetrical tread design and an advanced tread compound for improved traction in all-weather conditions including snow, improved mileage and “industry-leading” rolling resistance coefficients.
Pirelli's entry into the category, the P Zero Nero All Season, will roll out in December with a few sizes, with the full complement of 28 sizes in 17- to 19-inch rim diameters available by the first quarter, said Ricardo Cici, vice president of sales, North America, including seven run-flat versions.
Unlike the Conti product, Pirelli's P Zero Nero All Season will be an original equipment product as well as an aftermarket tire, Mr. Cici said.
The new tire will be OE on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang GT, including exclusive fitments in the 19-inch version on both vehicles.
The new tire, in development for more than two years, features an asymmetric tread and silica tread compounding for a balance of fuel efficiency and control in both dry and wet conditions.
Pirelli will offer a 45,000-mile limited treadwear warranty on the tire, the company's first on any UHP product.
