DALLAS (Aug. 24, 2007) — Michelin North America Inc. has unveiled the XDA5 commercial truck drive tire, which it claims delivers 30 percent more tread life through regeneration, at the Great American Truck Show in Dallas.
Michelin said it is marking the XDA5's entrance in the marketplace with a guarantee that the tire will outlast any drive tire it replaces by at least 30 percent, or else Michelin will credit double the amount of the price difference between the XDA5 and the tire it replaced. More information on the guarantee can be found at Michelin's Web site, www.michelintruck.com.
“For operators that are seeking a tire with a significantly longer service life without compromising performance, we are certain that the Michelin XDA5 tire will deliver exactly what they are looking for,” said Marc Laferriere, vice president of marketing for Michelin Americas Truck Tires.
The Greenville, S.C.-based tire maker said it used patented design and manufacturing techniques to mold the tread of the new tire in three dimensions. As the tire wears, the tread reveals new grooves and tread blocks, giving the tire a second life—self-regenerating to improve wet, worn traction, Michelin claimed.
The XDA5 is designed with double-wave Matrix sipes that give its 30/32-inch deep tread blocks the ability to lock together in all directions, improving resistance to scrub and minimizing irregular wear normally associated with deep tread lock designs, Michelin said.
At the base of the Matrix siping is a raindrop groove molded into the tread block that reveals a new groove when the tread has 10/32 tread remaining, according to Michelin. The tire also is designed with a footprint 10 percent wider than the tire it ultimately will replace within Michelin's line, the XDA HT, a company spokesman said.
The tire will be available soon in four sizes: 275/80R22.5, 11R22.5, 275/80R24.5 and 11R24.5, with a 305/75R24.5 size to come next year.
The Great American Truck Show is taking place Aug. 23-25 in Dallas.
