AKRON (June 18, 2007) — Bridgestone/Firestone (BFS), Michelin North America Inc.'s BFGoodrich brand and Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. have renewed their support of the Formula Drift Championship Series this season.
BFS will award $15,000 to the highest-ranked Bridgestone-sponsored driver in the Formula D Championship Series, as well as $10,000 to second place and $5,000 to third place. Last year was BFS' first year offering contingencies.
To be eligible, drivers must use Bridgestone tires exclusively throughout the entire seven-race series and display Bridgestone decals on their vehicles and driver suits, BFS said.
Bridgestone brand-sponsored driver Rhys Millen was the series champion in 2005 and runner-up last year, BFS said.
“Formula D continues to raise the bar as the pinnacle drift series in the United States,” said Phil Pacsi, vice president, North American consumer tire marketing for Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire L.L.C.
BFGoodrich is supporting Samuel “The Crazy Swede” Hubinette, who will race for Team Mopar/NuFormz Racing in a Dodge Charger SRT8 on BFGoodrich g-Force T/AKDW tires, and is the series' defending champion. Chris Cook also drives with Team Mopar/NuFormz Racing.
Cooper offers a contingency program for qualified drivers competing on the firm's tires for the entire event at each of the seven Formula D events. The company offers $5,000 for a first place finish, $3,000 for second and $1,000 for third. It also offers a contingency award of $750 for drivers finishing in fourth through eighth positions; $500 for ninth through 16th and $250 for 17th through 32nd.
This is Cooper's fourth year of Formula D series support.
The tire maker said it also offers awards if drivers complete all seven races on Cooper tires and win first ($15,000), second ($10,000) or third ($5,000) place overall.
Entering its fourth season, the Need for Speed Formula Drift Championship Series was the first officially sanctioned and recognized North American professional drifting championship series, BFS said.
The 2007 Formula D season concludes Oct. 13 at Irwindale Raceway in Irwindale, Calif.
