WASHINGTON (Nov. 6, 2006) — In anticipation of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) becoming mandated standard equipment on vehicles, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) has launched a Web site, www.checkmytires.com.
The site provides basic information on TPMS, includes a question-and-answer page on the importance of proper tire inflation, and reminds motorists that they should check their tire pressures at least once a month despite the presence of TPMS. ``Fuel efficiency is reduced by 1 percent for every three psi underinflation,´´ the Web site states. ``Keeping tires properly inflated translates into a free tank of gas annually.´´
AAM members include BMW Group, DaimlerChrysler L.L.C, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Mazda Motor Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Porsche A.G., Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen A.G.
