SEOUL, South Korea (Dec. 14, 2006) — Hankook Tire Co. Ltd. will supply tires to Audi A.G. for its A4 and A6L models made in China, starting in June.
Hankook will supply Y-rated 16- and 17-inch versions of its high-performance Ventus S1 Evo for the Chinese-made Audi models. The contract calls for about 90,000 tires next year, according to Jin Wook Choi, executive vice president Hankook Tire and head of Hankook Tyre China.
“This is a significant turning point for us since it marks the beginning of Hankook Tire's foray into the high-end automobile market,” Mr. Choi said. “This achievement is yet another step in our technology being acknowledged by world-class auto makers, including GM, Ford and Volkswagen, whom we have supplied to in the past.”
FAW Volkswagen makes Audi models at a joint venture plant in Changchun, China. The A4 is a five-passenger, mid-size sedan while the A6L is a stretched version of Audi's five-passenger A6 luxury sedan.
Hankook did not specify from which of its plants the tires would come, but it claims to be the No. 1 original equipment supplier in China, providing tires from its Hankook Tire Jiaxing Co. Ltd. plant in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, to the Chinese assembly plants of General Motors Corp., Volkswagen A.G., Fiat S.p.A. and Hyundai Motors Corp.
