MONTPELIER, Vt. (Nov. 16, 2006) — Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas declared himself “very pleased” that International Paper Co. (IP) has decided not to use tire-derived fuel (TDF) at its plant in Ticonderoga, N.Y., just across Lake Champlain from Vermont.
“I pledged that I would hold IP accountable for the results of this test and I am pleased that they have finally made the right decision,” Gov. Douglas said in a statement.
IP discontinued the planned two-week test burn after only one week, when it became apparent that particulate levels from the burn were too close to legal limits. IP decided it would not be cost-effective to use TDF in Ticonderoga, though the decision won't affect IP's use of TDF at seven other U.S. facilities.
Vermont officials and environmentalists had fought the proposal over pollution concerns.
