The SAE J1981 Road Hazard Impact Machine was designed in the mid 1990's and has been used by Standards Testing Labs as a research tool. The variety of stricker heads initially used were designed to resemble obstacles and objects that are commonly encountered in a wide range of driving environments. One can easily visualize how these striker heads relate or conform to hazards such as curbs, rails, angle iron, pot holes, rocks and relatively large debris.
