CLERMONT-FERRAND, France (May 30, 2006) – The funeral of Group Michelin CEO Edouard Michelin, who died May 26 at age 42 in a boating accident, will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. central European time at Cathedral de Clermont-Ferrand.
Due to limited space in the cathedral, only those with printed invitations will be allowed in, Group Michelin said in a posting on its Web site. The mass will be transmitted outside the cathedral on the Place of the Victoire.
At the same time, Michelin facilities worldwide will observe a moment of silence in his honor.
A private burial service will follow.
French authorities are still investigating the boating accident, which happened Friday afternoon in the Atlantic Ocean off the French Brittany coast.
Mr. Michelin's body was recovered later that same day by the French Coast Guard near the island of Sein, according to French news reports. Authorities also discovered the sunken boat, but Mr. Michelin's companion on the boat, the president of a regional fishing committee, has not been located.
A memorial fund in Mr. Michelin's honor is being established to benefit the families of sailors lost at sea, Michelin said.
Mr. Michelin, son of former managing partner Francois Michelin and great-grandson of company co-founder Edouard Michelin, has been chairman since 1999, succeeding his father. He was the youngest of four brothers.
He is survived by his wife Cecille, six children, his father Francois, three brothers and two sisters.
