Voight new Texas president
AUSTIN, Texas-The Texas Tire Dealers Association (TTDA) elected Jeff Voight, owner of Bastrop Tire & Automotive in Bastrop, Texas, its new president for 2006-2007 during its recent annual convention.
``We are excited about the potential growth of the Texas Tire Dealers Association and especially the future potential of the TTDA Convention,'' Mr. Voigt said in a prepared statement. ``As a member-driven organization, we focus on what we can do for the benefit and success of our membership.''
The TTDA held its convention April 20-22 at the Austin Marriott North Hotel in Austin. Keynote speakers included racing legend Mario Andretti and Bob Malerba, president of the Tire Industry Association.
In addition to Mr. Voight, the TTDA elected Wyatt Pugh of Lumberton Tire & Muffler in Lumberton, Texas, its president-elect. Four directors also either were elected or re-elected: Bonnie Moreland of Golden Star Tire in Texarkana; Rick Pilger of Pilger's Tire & Auto Center in College Station; Mike Gilmer of Tire Town in Sulphur Springs; and Ronnie Thomason of Thomason Tire Inc. in McKinney.
The TTDA also held an awards ceremony where it honored Pueblo Tires & Service, based in McAllen, as the 2006 Texas Dealer of the Year. Two other dealers, Mr. Moreland and Jerry White of White Tire Supply Inc. in Beaumont, received 2006 TTDA Lifetime Achievement Awards. Bridgestone/Firestone was recognized as the 2006 Texas Supplier of the Year.
TIA, IITDA offer ATS training
BOWIE, Maryland-The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is partnering with the Indiana/Illinois Tire Dealers Association (IITDA) to offer TIA's Automotive Tire Service (ATS) Certified Technician Training course to IITDA members this summer.
The two groups will offer 12 ATS courses in six cities July 24-Aug. 5.
Each city will host two one-day ATS courses allowing tire dealers to send half of their technicians to the program on the first day and the other half on the second day, if they so choose, TIA said.
The dates and locations are: July 24-25, Indianapolis; July 26-27, South Bend, Ind.; July 28-29, Chicago; July 31-Aug. 1, Decatur, Ill.; Aug. 2-3, Mount Vernon, Ill.; Aug. 4-5, Evansville, Ind.
ATS training covers all aspects of passenger/light truck tire service including lifting, balancing, mounting/demounting, installation and removal, tire pressure monitoring systems, repair procedures and industry charts and tables. The program offers a Certification Exam given at the conclusion of the course. Students passing the exam will receive a certified ATS technician certificate and 13 uniform emblems.

Schmatz named to U.S. Chamber
BETHESDA, Md.-Kathleen Schmatz, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association, has been named to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Association Committee of 100.
The chamber's group comprises the country's leading association chief executives, the aftermarket association said.
``The Association Committee of 100 is one of the most prestigious appointments in the association community,'' said Raymond Towle, executive director, association and chamber relations for the U.S. Chamber. ``The selection of these executives is a testament to their leadership and standing among their peers.''
Founded in 1958, the Association Committee's members represent association members before the chamber's board of directors. They also enhance chamber lobbying and coalition work, recommend programming and strengthen outreach to the business and association community.
Morgan elected AAIA chairman
BETHESDA, Md.-Richard Morgan has been elected chairman of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) for 2006-07.
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Mr. Morgan is currently president and CEO of the Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance, based in San Antonio. Mr. Morgan has more than 40 years of experience in the auto aftermarket, including service with General Motors Corp. as director of sales and marketing for AC Delco/Europe/Mid East and Africa, based in Antwerp, Belgium.
He also served 12 years as vice president and general manager of the automotive warehouse division of Straus Frank Co.
