SOUTH BEND, Ind. (May 19, 2006) — Piloting a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 shod with Pirelli Scorpion Zero Assimetricos, Erich Heuschele of Oxford, Mich., took the truck/SUV class championship in the 23rd running of the annual Tire Rack Cannonball One Lap of America.
Mr. Heuschele finished 19th overall in the event, founded by the Brock Yates, long-time Car and Driver magazine contributing editor.
Mark DaVia and Drew Wikstrom, driving a 2001 Porsche 996 Twin Turbo in the SSGT1 Big Bore class, finished first overall for the third straight year.
The eight-day competition began and ended at Tire Rack's South Bend facility with a wet and dry skid pad “shootout.” During the overall event, 94 entrants traveled almost 4,000 miles around the eastern U.S. and participated in 16 timed events at venues including the Autobahn Country Club Joliet, Florence Motor Speedway, Va., and Wisconsin's Road America course.
Mr. Heuschele placed first in class in both the wet and dry skid pad shootouts with his vehicle's Scorpion tires, according to Pirelli Tire North America Inc. That was good enough to rank him ahead of other vehicles including a Yokohama-shod Porsche, a Michelin-shod Ford SVT Shelby GT500 and Bridgestone-shod Camaro Z28, Pirelli added.
