GREENVILLE, S.C. (May 18, 2006) — The South Carolina Silver Crescent Foundation has awarded Bridgestone/Firestone's Aiken County, S.C., plant its manufacturing excellence award for 2005, based on the unit's economic impact, commitment to the work force and involvement and contributions to the local community.
The Aiken County radial passenger and light truck tire plant in Graniteville, S.C., began operations in 1999 and today employs about 920. BFS has invested $477 million in the plant during that time, including a $17 million expansion under way that will create 36 additional jobs.
In 2005, the Bridgestone/Firestone Trust Fund contributed more than $159,000 to local organizations via the Aiken County facility.
The award, for the “large manufacturer” category, was given May 17 at the foundation's annual Salute to Manufacturing Luncheon, which is held each spring in conjunction with the Advanced Manufacturing & Productivity Exposition and Conference in Greenville.
In accepting the award, Plant Manager Mike Rose lauded the employees' dedication and character as key reasons for the plant's recognition.
