Treadways Corp. has added the Sailun brand radial truck tire-made by China's Qingdao Sailun Radial Tyre Co. Ltd.-to its truck tire line portfolio.
Treadways is offering the Sailun line exclusively in the U.S. through all its distribution units-Eldorado Tire, Jetzon Tire, Laramie Tire, Sumitomo Tire, Telstar Tire and TreadXpress-and in Canada and Mexico on a non-exclusive basis, according to Lyle Symonds, manager of private brands for Treadways.
Treadways started marketing the line late last year and is working with Qingdao Sailun on additional sizes and tread patterns, Mr. Symonds said.
``We'd been looking for an off-shore truck product to go with our Sumitomo line,'' he said. ``We visited a number of potential suppliers, but we came away most impressed with the quality of the Sailun product.''
The product catalog shows 12 tread patterns-one for steer axles, two for trailers, three for drive axle fitments and the rest all-wheel positions.
Treadways' primary truck tire line in the U.S. is the Sumitomo brand, but the company also offers several other brands, including Primewell and Treva radial lines, plus the Indus bias line.
Qingdao Sailun has been making tires only since late 2003. It was started by individuals associated with Qingdao University, which teaches tire engineering courses and had been called upon to deliver turnkey plant engineering for a number of other Chinese tire companies, Mr. Symonds said.
Qingdao Sailun was established in 2002 with funding from the Governmental Administration of College and Universities and from private enterprise. The plant was built on 600 acres of land in Qingdao's National Economic and Technological Development Zone.
The company already has broken ground on a second factory on the grounds, for light truck tires, and has plans for a third to make radial and bias-ply specialty tires.
