PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (March 14, 2006) — The Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB) will hold a press conference and a tire inflation contest March 24 at the the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky.
The tire contest, dubbed “Pump 'em, Don't thump 'em,” will demonstrate that kicking, thumping, banging or hitting a tire cannot accurately determine tire inflation pressure, according to TRIB Managing Director Harvey Brodsky.
TRIB will have three truck tires mounted on wheels, each inflated to a certain pressure. The challenge is for participating CDL-holding truckers to kick, thump, bang or hit a tire and then report what they believe to be the tire's inflation pressure. To win the contest, truckers must come within 5 psi of the inflation pressure in a tire.
To win the grand prize, a contestant must accurately guess the pre-set inflation pressure of a tire.
The event will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at TRIB's booth, No. 6973 in the West Wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center. It will include a brief discussion of how truck and equipment owners and operators can make the most of their fuel and tire money by paying greater attention to proper tire maintenance, especially air pressure.
Co-sponsoring the contest is the Meritor Tire Inflation System by PSI, an automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) for trailers designed to increase tire life, fuel efficiency and safety, and keep vehicles on the road generating revenue.
