MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (Nov. 18, 2005) — Bridgestone/Firestone Canada Inc. awarded its Canadian Truck Hero Award to a British Columbia trucker who comforted a seriously injured trucker in his final moments.
Kevin Harris received a $3,000 (Canadian) check from BFS and a trophy. The tire maker—which has presented the award since 1956—also is making a $3,000 donation in Mr. Harris' name to a memorial trust fund set up for Peter Mills, the other trucker.
Last August, Mr. Harris witnessed Mr. Mills' rig veer out of control and roll into a ditch, pinning him in the cab. Mr. Harris climbed into the cab and tried to rescue the driver but was unable to release him. He stayed with Mr. Mills to keep him comfortable as fires ignited around him from leaking diesel fuel. Mr. Harris fought the fires with an extinguisher and remained in the cab until Mr. Mills died.
“I thank God every day that man was there with him,” Katrina Mills, the driver's wife, said in a BFS statement. “I'm so happy that he was there, and that Pete wasn't there by himself.”
