CYPRESS, CALIF. (Nov. 16, 2005) — Toyo Tire (USA) Corp. has added a line of drag racing slicks and front “free-rolling” tires to its Proxes line of racing/performance tires.
The launch follows an “intensive” four-year research, development and testing program, Toyo said, including competition testing by selected racers the past two years.
The Proxes drag slicks are available in three sizes initially—32.0x14.5-15, 33.0x16.0-15 and 33.0x17.0-15—and are targeted at the Super Comp, Super Gas and Comp Eliminator classes. Other sizes are in development.
The tires can be used for either rear- or front-wheel-drive cars. Toyo has improved the wear of these lines allow for more runs before tire replacement, according to Hideki Ueha, senior staff engineer and product manager, racing and high performance tires.
The free rolling front tires weigh only about 10 pounds each and feature extremely low rolling resistance, Toyo said. They are available in two sizes—25.0x4.5-15 and 26.0x4.5-15.
The tires are being made at a Toyo plant in Japan. The method of distribution is still being worked out. Toyo has not determined whether it will offer contingencies.
Toyo race-tested the new tires with a number of competitors in Southern California, including Thomas Bayer, who won 2005 Southern California Drag Racing Association championship and the 2004 Super Comp Association of Southern California championship using the Proxes drag slicks on his Super Comp dragster.
