CARLISLE, England (Aug. 23, 2005) — A fire at a warehouse Aug. 22 near Pirelli S.p.A.´s tire factory in Carlisle destroyed more than $1 million worth of rubber compounds destined for use at the Pirelli factory.
The warehouse, about two miles outside Carlisle and seven miles from the factory, is on a former Royal Air Force facility but is close to the River Eden, making pollution a significant risk during the fire-fighting operation.
A spokesman for Pirelli said the company had about 500 metric tons of various different compounds in the warehouse. He added that operations at the factory would not be disrupted by the incident.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
