NOKIA, Finland (Aug. 1, 2005) — Nokian Tyres P.L.C. is launching a range of run-flat winter tires to tap into growing demand for this type of product in Europe.
Nokian said although run-flat tires account for only about 0.3 percent of the European marketplace, sales last year were triple those of 2003 and half of run-flats sold were winter tires.
The tire maker will begin deliveries of the tires in September in three different tread patterns and three sizes: Nokian Hakkapeliitta 4, Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi and Nokian WR in 195/55R16, 205/55R16 and 225/45R17.
Nokian said the new tire is designed to deliver run-flat mobility of 30 to 90 miles, depending on load, at speeds of no more than 50 miles per hour. The run-flats have reinforced sidewalls.
The company cautions that for safety reasons, run-flat tires should be mounted only on cars with air pressure monitoring systems that are integrated into the IT system or some other system that warns of tire pressure changes and a driving stability management system. The firm did not say if it would sell the tires in North America.
