Pirelli Tire North America Inc. has expanded capacity at its Rome plant by about a third with the start of a fourth Modular Integrated Roboticized System (MIRS) module.
The new module will be dedicated principally to the 26-inch Scorpion Zero line of sport-utility vehicle tires. It will bring capacity at the Rome factory-which recently gained ISO 14001 certification-to more than 350,000 tires annually, the Rome-based tire maker said.
Although the MIRS process is ``flexible enough to produce both passenger car and SUV tires,'' the new module will make mostly the 315/40R26 Scorpion Zero. Pirelli said the tire was introduced at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas but previously had been produced only in Germany.
The tire features a 120V load rating and Pirelli's ``Double Z'' tread design, which the company said ``provides maximum dry traction along with total wet traction capabilities.'' It is aimed, in part, at performance tuners working specifically with the Hummer H2 ``who want to make the ultimate wheel and tire conversion while retaining the legal integrity of the vehicle,'' the company added.
