The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is partnering with Michelin North America Inc. (MNA) to create tire inflation stations at high-traffic Welcome Centers throughout the state.
Michelin and the SCDOT recently opened the first of seven stations planned over the next two years, MNA said. The first station is located on the eastbound side of Intestate 26 near Landrum, S.C.
The stations will provide a designated area for motorists to check tire pressures, fill tires with the proper amount of air and learn more about tire safety and the importance of proper tire maintenance, MNA said.
``Tires are one of the most important parts of a vehicle and often the most overlooked,'' said Kathy Lyles, worldwide director of tire testing for Michelin. ``It takes just a few minutes to check your tires and doing so can save lives. It can also save you hours or even days on the road and improve gas mileage for your car.''
The station features a heavy-duty air compressor for supplying air to car and light truck tires, as well as instructional materials in both English and Spanish that demonstrate the correct way to fill tires.
