TOKYO (July 15, 2005) — Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co. Ltd. has held the grand opening July 15 for its new truck and bus tire plant near Bangkok, Thailand, as the first shipments started running.
Production started in April at the plant as the first phase of construction was completed. The annual production capacity stands at 350,000 tires, the company said, but a planned second phase will push that output to 700,000 tires a year. The tires will be exported to replacement markets outside of Japan, including Europe, North America and Oceania.
“The new facility's mission will be to fulfill our commitment to provide the best products at competitive prices and on time,” said Tadanobu Nagumo, president of Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. “We will accordingly cultivate Yokohama Tier Manufacturing (Thailand) so that it becomes our largest comprehensive tire production base outside Japan.”
Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) is a subsidiary of Yokohama Rubber that was established in January 2004. Last December the subsidiary bought adjacent land to double its plant size area. The overall goal is to build a plant with an annual capacity of 1.4 million passenger car and light truck tires by November 2006. Second and third stage expansions are planned thereafter, Yokohama said.
