WASHINGTON (June 28, 2005) — Matthew Whitaker and Oliver Dalman, automotive tech students at Vale High School in Vale, Ore., were the top winners in 2005 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Contest in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Whitaker and Mr. Dalman each won a $2,500 general scholarship, various scholarships to general and applied auto technical colleges, and a $1,000 general education scholarship for their school.
Second place went to Schuyler Toyama and Kameron Welsh of Maui High School in Hawaii, each winning a $2,000 general scholarship and several applied auto tech scholarships. Finishing in third through tenth place, respectively, were the teams from Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Maine, New York and Massachusetts.
Contestants were graded 60 percent on hands-on repairs and 40 percent on a 100-question written test.
