The first commercial application for Michelin North America Inc.'s Tweel non-pneumatic integrated tire/wheel unit could be for skid-steer and similar civilian and/or military vehicles, based on promising results of tests the firm conducted on a Caterpillar skid-steer (above). The most noticeable improvement over pneumatic tires in skid-steers is the virtual elimination of wheel hop, according to a video Michelin showed at the Tweel launch earlier this year. Michelin also is testing the Tweel for military/police enforcement purposes because of its extended mobility possibilities. The video also depicted a skid-steer-type vehicle driving over a land mine and then driving away on a damaged (photo at right) but intact Tweel.
