ALBANY, N.Y. (May 17, 2005) — Tire and auto aftermarket associations are opposing a bill before the New York State Senate that would require every tire sold in the state to bear a non-coded date of manufacture molded onto both sidewalls.
The bill also would require a public outreach campaign to inform consumers of the dangers of tire aging. The Tire Industry Association (TIA) and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) sent a joint letter to the New York Senate Transportation Committee, asking the committee to turn back the bill.
“A customer simply needs to ask a tire professional and can be shown that (date of manufacture) information on both the tire itself and their invoice,” TIA and SEMA said. “It would be too costly for tire manufacturers to retool their molds to add a ‘born on' date to the sidewall when that information is already there.”
The bill is scheduled for a May 17 hearing before the committee.
