A semi tractor/trailer loaded with approximately $60,000 worth of passenger and light truck tires was stolen March 22 from K&M Tire's distribution center in Lincoln Park, Mich.
The truck had stopped at the facility at 1 p.m. for a routine delivery when an unidentified man jumped into the semi and took off while the driver was inside the center inquiring on which dock to pull into for unloading, said Cheryl Perrine, K&M Tire's vice president. The trailer had a mix of Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal tires.
The driver had left the truck running, and the thief and an accomplice had pulled up beside the truck in a white van then sped away. Ms. Perrine said no one was able to get a clear look at the license plates or at the thieves other than that the driver behind the wheel of the semi was a white man.
``One of our guys heard the semi taking off and grinding gears, so he ran out real quick and looked but all he could see was it turning a corner and that was it,'' Ms. Perrine told Tire Business. ``We didn't have a vehicle right there (to go chase it).''
K&M Tire, a Delphos-based wholesaler with five locations, is offering a reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the people involved or the return of the semi and tires. The company is asking anyone with any information to contact the Lincoln Park Detective Bureau at (313) 381-8378 or the dealership itself at (888) 465-1200.
