Tire shipments to the U.S. replacement and original equipment markets began 2005 with mixed results, according to Rubber Manufacturers Association data.
Aftermarket shipments for replacement passenger and medium and wide-base truck tires grew 2.9 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, in January compared with the same month a year ago, the data showed.
Original equipment shipments also improved in these categories, up 1.6 percent for passenger tires and 26.8 percent for medium and wide-base truck tires.
In contrast, replacement shipments of light and heavy truck tires fell during the month, slipping 0.3 percent and 19.9 percent, respectively.
As for OE, LT tire shipments fell 6.6 percent during the month, while those for heavy truck tires rose 7.8 percent.
In Canada, replacement shipments of LT tires improved 5 percent during the month, while those for passenger tires and medium/heavy truck tires declined 9.8 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively.
