Jack's Tire & Oil Inc. is expanding into Arizona, opening a commercial tire center and Michelin Retread Technologies Inc. (MRTI) retread plant in Phoenix, primarily to accommodate existing customers that operate in Arizona.
Logan-based Jack's Tire was scheduled to start operations at the Phoenix site in April, but Vice President Dick Tolotti declined to give details on the facility until it is up and running.
The new site, located on a 5-acre plot, will be the firm's ninth commercial outlet and fourth retread plant and, along with an expanded commercial outlet in Twin Falls, Idaho, will help fuel the dealership's growth. Sales are expected to grow between 5 and 6 percent this year to more than $46 million, the firm said recently.
Jack's Tire, already considered the third largest MRTI retreader in North America, operates retread plants in Boise, Idaho, and Logan and Salt Lake City, turning out nearly 440 units daily among them.
In Twin Falls, the dealership moved in January into a larger, purpose-built facility that allows that location to offer a greater range of services, including truck alignment, Mr. Tolotti said.
The new plant in Phoenix will be equipped to retread Michelin's X One wide-base single truck tire, Mr. Tolotti said, which is gaining popularity with truckers both for its ability to increase payloads and for mileage savings. The dealership began retreading X Ones last year at its Boise plant, he added.
Jack's Tire is counting on its retreading operations to help it fill the gaps created by spot shortages of new truck tires, Mr. Tolotti said, although the firm is now starting to see shortages of retreadable casings as well.
Jack's Tire operates in Utah and southern Idaho, with four commercial outlets in each state and a retail outlet in Utah. The dealership was founded more than 50 years ago as a livery stable by William P. Bowen, grandfather of current president and CEO J. David Bowen and father of Jack Bowen, who took over the dealership in 1975 from his father and for whom the company was later named.
