PRESTON, Minn. (March 25, 2005) — Bob Maust, head of the Heartland Energy and Recycling Inc. project for a dedicated tire-derived fuel (TDF) electric plant, has abandoned his plans to build the facility in his home town of Preston, Minn., and is looking for other venues for the project.
Mr. Maust said he has had several offers from various towns, and that he is evaluating which locale offers the best incentives and the best transportation. He will make his decision in one to two months, he said.
Mr. Maust's plans were met with substantial opposition in Preston from local environmentalists concerned that the TDF-burning process he wanted to use had never been used commercially before.
In February the Citizens' Board of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency ordered Mr. Maust to perform a new environmental impact statement on the project, which would have delayed it by as much as 18 months and cost an estimated $200,000.
