BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. (Nov. 19, 2004) — Bridgestone/Firestone Retail & Commercial Operations, L.L.C. (BFRC), in partnership with Keep America Beautiful, Inc., helped collect a record-setting 1.22 million scrap tires this year from communities for recycling.
“We wanted to build on last year's success by helping Keep America Beautiful reach the 1 million tire mark and continue increasing the recycling of used automotive batteries and engine oil,” said Larry Magee, CEO and president of BFRC. “Through the involvement of our teammates across the country, we not only met but surpassed this year's goal. Firestone is proud to be a part of Keep America Beautiful's efforts, and of our company's track record in protecting the environment and helping strengthen our communities.”
BFRC through its Firestone Tire & Service Centers, TiresPlus and ExpertTire chains had each of its 2,200 company-owned stores participate in the 2004 Great American Cleanup campaign by serving as community drop-off locations. The stores accepted used engine oil, automotive batteries and scrap tires at no charge from community cleanups for proper recycling, and they recycled oil filters, antifreeze, air conditioning refrigerant and lead wheel weights, among other items.
The number of tires collected was a third more than in 2003, BFRC said.
Firestone stores also sponsored refreshments for Keep America Beautiful volunteers, donated volunteer appreciation coupons, developed and displayed the organization's promotional materials.
