MUNICH, Germany (Sept. 22, 2004) — Pirelli S.p.A. launched its Pirelli Safety Wheel System at the motorcycle show Intermot 2004 this month in Munich.
The system is designed to reduce the risks of motorcycle tire punctures or loss of inflation pressure. The system re-inflates a motorcycle's tire in the case of either a puncture or loss of air pressure. The safety system includes three components: a special rim with an internal tube of compressed air, a valve that regulates the passage of pressure between the tube and the tire and a system that monitors the pressure and temperature of the tires.
Pirelli said in the case of a puncture, the system notifies the rider of the pressure loss, and the valve allows air into the tire, compensating for the loss. The tire maker said the rider then has time to stop the bike in a safe place.
The device was also designed by Brembo, an Italian company specializing in braking systems and motorcycle components.
