GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 16, 2004) — Three Michelin North America Inc. tire plants are shut down as Hurricane Ivan slams across the Gulf Coast.
A Michelin spokeswoman said the tire maker's plants in Tuscaloosa, Opelika and Dothan—all in Alabama—were shut down for the storm. She said Tuscaloosa closed at 11 a.m. today while Opelika and Dothan closed yesterday. So far the plants are slated to reopen Friday morning, but that depends on the weather.
None of the plants reported any damage, the spokeswoman said, but Michelin shut the factories down as a precaution and to not put employees at risk. The Greenville-based tire maker doesn't expect any noticeable impact on supply levels as a result of the shutdown.
“This is a minor hiccup,” she told Tire Business.
