SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (Sept. 7, 2004) — H&O Precure Retread Inc. will relocate to a new 9,000-sq.-ft. facility it planned to begin building early this month.
Owner Mark Larsen said he recently secured a 0.87-acre parcel of property in Cottage Grove, Ore., for $58,938 and plans to spend $250,000 constructing his new retread shop. He said he's hoping to move into the facility in January.
“I lease here and would like to own my own building,” Mr. Larsen said. “I have a little more square footage where I'm at but it's not a lot of open space, I have to turn a lot of corners. I'll be more efficient when I move and set up.”
H&O is an independent retreader that supplies precure retreaded tires to about 50 dealers throughout Oregon, including Northwest Tire Factory outlets. The company doesn't sell new tires nor does it operate service trucks. It retreads 55 tires per day in Springfield, though Mr. Larsen said his company has the capacity to retread 100 tires per day.
The dealership retreads mostly logger and construction vehicle tires using the Bandag Inc. process. He leases his current location from Schmunk's Tire & Auto Service Center, which also is one of his retread customers.
“We take the time to clean the tire up and retread it; it's a niche that the larger shops don't want to handle,” Mr. Larsen told Tire Business. “I can be anywhere in the state of Oregon because I'm wholesale. I go out to tire stores all over the state of Oregon and pick up their truck tires and bring them back in a week with a retread on them.”
H&O was founded in 1963 by John Harbeintner and Elmer Odell. Mr. Larsen joined the company in 1982 as a minority owner and then became sole owner in 1999 when Mr. Harbeintner retired.
The retreader posts $1.2 million in annual sales and employs six.
