GREENVILLE, S.C. (Aug. 27, 2004) — Michelin North America Inc. will donate $503,000 in equipment to youth soccer leagues in the U.S. as part of its Uniroyal brand's sponsorship of U.S. Olympic soccer player Julie Foudy.
Ms. Foudy, captain of the U.S. Olympic women's soccer team, has been a spokeswoman for Michelin's Uniroyal brand for five years. The tire maker donated $1,000 in soccer equipment for every minute she played in the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece. For every goal, the company pledged $100,000. Ms. Foudy played 503 minutes but did not score any goals.
The equipment will be donated to youth leagues in communities where the tire maker and its dealers lend their support.
Michelin said its Uniroyal Tire youth soccer initiative has rasied more than $5 million over five years through equipment donations and fund-raising.
