LEXINGTON, S.C. (June 23, 2004) — Michelin North America Inc. and Toyota Motor North America Inc. donated $20,000 to a local school district foundation.
The money, given to the Lexington School District One Educational Foundation, will be used to help sponsor a virtual high school and provide teacher grants. The donation was through Toyota's Community Connection program, which is aimed at supporting non-profit organizations in cities where the auto maker and its suppliers do business. The 6-year-old program has donated more than $800,000 in 20 states.
Michelin's Lexington passenger tire plant donated $10,000, which was matched by Toyota.
The local organization's virtual school makes classes available 24 hours a day, seven days a week over the Internet, the group said. Students now can take English, economics and American government.
The group wants to add more courses, increase the number of students enrolled, market the program to students in other districts and offer training and development courses for district employees.
