TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (May 21, 2004) — International Paper Co. will soon apply to New York state for a permit to carry out a test burn of tire-derived fuel at its Ticonderoga facility.
International Paper wants to demonstrate to environmental officials and concerned citizens in upstate New York and neighboring Vermont that it can replace up to 10 percent of its annual fuel at Ticonderoga with TDF without harming the area´s air quality.
If the test burn is successful, the company is expected to apply for a state permit to use TDF permanently, said Doug Elliott, an environmental analyst with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
“We'd expected them to apply by the end of May, but the ball is in their court,” Mr. Elliott said.
Officials of International Paper—which already uses TDF successfully in other parts of the U.S.—could not immediately be reached for comment.
