SOUTH BEND, Ind. (May 12, 2004) — The 2004 Tire Rack Cannonball One Lap of America race raised an estimated $50,000 for various charities, the mail-order and Internet firm said.
In the race, drivers travelled more than 5,600 miles across 10 states while stopping at seven race tracks across the country to raise money for charities such as the Transplant Recipients International Organization and Laps to Conquer Multiple Sclerosis. The race concluded May 8.
“It'll be a while before we know exactly how much money was raised, but initial estimates put it near $50,000,” said Matt Edmonds, vice president of marketing for South Bend-based Tire Rack.
The race was founded in 1984 by automotive journalist Brock Yates.
