NEW YORK (April 9, 2004) — Pep Boys—Manny, Moe & Jack has started stocking Continental and General brand tires at its 560-plus U.S. stores.
Pep Boys, which last year disclosed plans to start offering flag brand tires alongside its Cornell and Futura private labels, is carrying the General Ameri*G4S and Ameri*GS60 passenger car tires and the Continental ContiTrac SUV tire line, according to Continental Tire North America Inc.
Philadelphia-based Pep Boys sold Goodyear, Dunlop, BFGoodrich and Michelin tires last year in its stores in Denver and Houston to test consumer
reaction to top-line brands in its stores. The company, in a recent prospectus, said offering name brand tires is expected to attract more customers and help establish those customer relationships earlier in the post-warranty period of their car's life.
Pep Boys has stocked Hankook Ventus performance car and light truck tires since late 2002.
Tires accounted for 16 percent of Pep Boys' fiscal 2002 annual sales, or $347.3 million. The chain generated another $415.8 million in automotive service-related sales last year, according to company financial documents.
Continental is pursuing additional distribution agreements for the Conti brand, according to a presentation the company made at a recent Morgan Stanley automotive analysts conference.
