Kauffman Tire Inc., a large regional tire dealership based in Atlanta, has acquired Ravenna Tire Service Inc. in Ravenna and Orwell Tire Service Inc. in Orwell, Ohio, from owner Dan Rhodes in a transaction that closed March 1.
The two outlets offer retail, commercial and farm tires and also have wholesale operations. In addition, the Ravenna location has a Goodyear retread plant. The purchase price was not disclosed. Both companies are long-time Goodyear dealerships.
The additions give Kauffman Tire a total of 41 retail outlets, including three that are combination retail and commercial, and 11 distribution centers in Georgia, Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Ohio.
In addition, the company now has two retread plants-the Goodyear plant in Ravenna and a Bandag plant producing 120 tires a day in Wooster, Ohio.
It also operates an e-commerce tire and wheel business called Treadepot.com.
John Kauffman, president of Kauffman Tire, said the purchase strengthens the company's operations in Northeastern Ohio.
Founded in Wooster in 1936 by Mr. Kauffman's father, the dealership has two other locations in the state, a retail and commercial outlet, retread plant and wholesale center in Wooster and a combination retail and commercial facility and distribution center in Medina, Ohio.
Mr. Kauffman's son, Mark Kauffman, is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the company, and Mr. Kauffman's son-in-law, Tom Money, assists Mark Kauffman.
Mr. Rhodes, 64, said he sold the family business to his longtime friend as a succession planning move. While he has four children, Mr. Rhodes said none of them were interested in the business, ``so now is the time to sell.''
``I think it's a good move for both of us,'' he said. ``This has to be done sometime.''
Mr. Kauffman said the newly acquired locations will continue to operate with no changes. Mr. Rhodes will stay on to run both outlets as vice president of Ravenna Tire, with 23 employees, and Orwell Tire, with nine.
Frank Rhodes, Mr. Rhodes' father, founded Ravenna Tire in 1945 and sold it to his son in 1975. Dan Rhodes then bought Orwell Tire in 1992.
