Tire dealers throughout Canada are finding selling a set of four winter tires a bit easier this year, thanks indirectly to Transport Canada, the transportation safety agency, and the Tire Dealers Association of Canada (TDAC).
Under the heading tire safety, the agency's Web site has several pages of information on tires, including one on winter tire safety. On that page, which was developed with input from the Rubber Association of Canada, the agency states: ``To help maintain control and stability of your vehicle in slippery conditions, snow tires must be installed in sets of four.''
Enter the TDAC, which took that language and slapped it, along with a Transport Canada logo, on an 11- by 14-inch poster titled ``Install Four Winter Tires.''
Dealers, concerned about liability questions related to the two vs. four snow tires issue, report they have far fewer ``discussions'' with customers wanting to buy only two winter tires.
``I won't put only two winter tires on a customer's car,'' said Eric Gilbert, owner of Ericway Tire Inc. in Beamsville, Ontario. ``But now I can point to that poster, and it reinforces in the customer's mind why I insist on four.''
The TDAC supplies the poster free to TDAC members and for $12.95 (Canadian) for non-members.
``Intriguingly,'' said TDAC Director John Goodwin, ``shortly after we began offering the poster, Transport Canada called up and ordered some.''

INSTALL FOUR WINTER TIRES
Vehicle handling will be improved when identical tires are installed on all four wheels.
