NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2004) — Bridgestone/Firestone and Michelin North America Inc. have joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership, a national government-business joint effort to reduce emissions from commercial trucking.&Copy;
The transport program promotes long-term cost savings, fuel consumption reduction and efficiency improvement, thereby reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Michelin said it demonstrates these goals in products such as the Michelin XDA Energy dual tire and the X One wide single truck tire, as well as in its Challenge Bibendum event.
BFS operates more than 200 delivery trucks in the U.S., making it one of the 100 largest private fleets in the country, the company said.
The goal of the SmartWay partnership is to cut 33 million to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions — the most common greenhouse gaus — and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide — a contributor to smog — annually by 2012.
