FINDLAY, Ohio (Nov. 4, 2003) — Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. debuted its Zeon racing tire at the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, part of the Cooper Tire Championship Series doubleheader, at Road Atlanta on Oct. 17.
The Zeon was the featured spec tire during the season finale of the Zetec Championship and will become the official tire of the series for the 2004 season.
In August, Cooper had announced a five-year agreement with Formula Motorsports Inc. to create the Cooper Tire Championship Series. As the new namesake and spec tire of the series, all the Zetec Championship teams will be required to run on Findlay-based Cooper's Zeon tires.
“This arrangement makes the sponsorship a true win-win,” said Carl Casalbore, Cooper Tire vice president of high performance tire development. “The teams benefit from racing on a high-quality, name-brand tire and from increased visibility through Cooper Tire's marketing support.”
According to a Cooper press release, Jonathan Bomarito, 2003 Zetec Champion and winner of both rounds at Road Atlanta, called the Cooper racing slicks “great,” noting they were “good from the first lap to the last….” He led all 36 laps at Road Atlanta, setting the fastest lap in both races by just under 0.3 second.
This month the Zetec Championship begins its build-up for the 2004 season with a series-sanctioned test Nov. 24-25 at Roebling Road in Savannah, Ga. The full 2004 Zetec Championship schedule will be released soon, Cooper said.
