NORTHVILLE, Mich. (Oct. 31, 2003) — Aluminum wheel and automotive components maker Hayes Lemmerz International has suspended operations at its Huntington, Ind., plant after an explosion there Oct. 29 killed one worker and critically injured two others.
The accident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. in the rear of the plant's manufacturing area, Hayes Lemmerz said. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
All remaining employees were evacuated from the facility and notified not to report to work during the temporary closing.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Curtis Clawson, chairman and CEO, in a prepared statement.
“The safety of our employees and the welfare of their families are of the utmost importance to the company.” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to our employees and their families during this difficult time. We are actively investigating the cause of the accident and will provide more information as it becomes available,"
Local media, quoting the Allen County coroner, identified the fatally injured worker as Shawn D. Boone, 33.
