CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Oct. 29, 2003) — American Tire Distributors Inc. raised more than $40,000 at an Oct. 13 charity golf outing benefiting Loaves & Fishes, a local non-profit organization that provides food to people in crisis.
More than 140 golfers participated, including employees, customers and suppliers of ATD. The event was held at the Peninsula Club near Charlotte, N.C.
Believing that all people in a community should be able to meet their basic hunger needs, Loaves & Fishes is a nondenominational organization founded and operated by local religious congregations.
“The money raised by American Tire Distributors will provide more than 61,500 meals for people in our local community,” said Beverly Howard, executive director of Loaves & Fishes.
“Their gift equals the largest gift we've ever received through a single donation, and it is especially important to us now—as our community has experienced massive layoffs and donations are low—because after all, hunger never takes a vacation,” she added.
Since the inception of ATD's charity golf tournament, the company has raised more than $250,000 for various charitable organizations. Last year, the company raised more than $40,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Ada Jenkins Center.
In 2001, American Tire Distributors raised more than $45,000, part of which was donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief in New York and Washington, D.C. in the wake of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks.
