TOKYO (Oct. 23, 2003) — Group Michelin and TRW Automotive have formed a joint venture to focus on direct tire pressure monitoring systems for passenger cars and trucks.
The new venture, EnTire Solutions L.L.C., is an extension of a two-year collaboration by the two companies to develop the sensors, the companies said. The joint venture will be based in the U.S. Richard Wolfe, a longtime TRW executive, will be CEO of the new company, and TRW's existing manufacturing base will handle production of the systems. The company also will offer tools, parts and services for original equipment manufacturers.
“With Michelin's expertise in tires, wheels and suspension systems and TRW's expertise in integrated safety systems, radio-communications and electronics, the joint venture is an attractive package to prospective customers,” Mr. Wolfe said in a statement.
The companies said several original equipment manufacturers have selected the EnTire Solution product, and the first systems are being shipped to customers in Canada for introduction in the U.S. market this year. Other customers who have sourced the systems from EnTire Solutions include Asian, American and European manufacturers, the companies said.
The EnTire system uses a battery-powered pressure sensor mounted on the valve stem inside the wheel. The sensor communicates tire pressure and temperature information to a vehicle-mounted receiver via a radio signal. The products are designed to fit most vehicles currently manufactured worldwide.
