ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Oct. 21, 2003) — It may be the first time an auction will determine who is lucky enough to take home a big nail that had been stuck in a tire.
City officials in Allen Park will sell the 11-foot tall nail from the giant Uniroyal tire to the highest bidder on eBay to raise funds for the Allen Park Historical Society. For decades the nail had been jutting out of the tire along Interstate 94 in metro Detroit.
In August Michelin North America Inc. began a $1 million renovation to the tire, which originally was a Ferris wheel at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York. The nail was removed in September and donated to the city.
As part of the auction, the city will deliver the nail only within a 25-mile range, and the buyer must have means to unload the nail, which weighs about 250 pounds.
