TYLER, Texas (Oct. 9, 2003) — Goodyear's Kelly-Springfield plant in Tyler will lay off about 200 people by Nov. 14 to reduce overcapacity in the market, a spokeswoman for the Akron-based tire maker said.
The move is expected to cut production of smaller-sized Kelly passenger tires by about 11,000 tires per day, the spokeswoman said. While Goodyear did not disclose the current production level at the plant, Tire Business statistics estimate its capacity at 37,500 units per day. By about March 2004, the plant is expected to add about 5,000 tires per day, the spokeswoman said, though plans for rehiring those laid off or resuming full production will be based on market conditions.
The Goodyear spokeswoman said no other Goodyear plants will pick up the reduced production.
