WOODBURY, N.J. (Oct. 9, 2003) — A 20-year-old man pled guilty to killing a tire shop employee during an attempted robbery July 9, the local prosecutor's office said.
Aaron T. Sheppard was arrested the same day that Joseph J. Green, 52, was found by co-workers at Romar Tire Co. in Woodbury. Mr. Green had permission to sleep at the shop, and Mr. Sheppard appeared to have discovered him when he broke into the tire shop in the early morning hours of July 9. Authorities said Mr. Sheppard bludgeoned Mr. Green repeatedly on the head. Mr. Sheppard was arrested that night, authorities said.
In accordance with his plea, Mr. Sheppard will be sentenced to 35 years in state prison when he faces his sentencing hearing Nov. 21, the prosecutor said. He will serve 30 years before being eligible for parole.
A spokesman for the prosecutor said Mr. Sheppard ended up stealing only a camcorder from the tire shop. Another man, Scott T. Wherrity, 30, was charged with trafficking and receiving stolen property for selling the camcorder, which he received from Mr. Sheppard July 9, according to authorities.
