GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 26, 2003)—Michelin North America Inc. has chosen a winner for its Michelin Ironman “Hometown Heroes” essay contest.
The Greenville-based tire maker said Frank Fumich of Falls Church, Va., will be one of 1,500 athletes swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running 26.2 miles in the Ironman competition in Hawaii Oct. 18. Mr. Fumich's essay, about his father, a World War II veteran and former prisoner of war, earned Mr. Fumich and his father an all-expense paid trip for both of them to the Hawaii competition.
The essay contest was open to U.S. citizens among the 205 amateur athletes in the competition. Participants were asked to explain how one person has pushed them to be their best during training and why they would like that person to be at the finish line.
“We partnered with Ironman because the passion and dedication it takes to complete the race mirrors our own passion for tires,” said Sheryl Henderson, director of the Michelin brand.
