Dealership adds 1 store, renames 2
LEXINGTON, Neb.-Nebraskaland/Kansasland Tire Group will add one store under its Kansasland moniker and change two existing stores to its Nebraskaland nameplate.
Gary Wright, president of the Lexington-based commercial and retail dealership, said the company bought four Pro Tire & Auto Service locations in October 2002. Two of the locations-in Fort Morgan, Colo., and Alliance, Neb.-have since been closed, and the remaining two-in Chadron, Neb., and Scottsbluff, Neb.-will be renamed Nebraskaland Tire in the coming months, Mr. Wright said.
Under its Kansasland name, the company plans to open a store in Concordia, Kan. The dealership recently bought Christensen Oil Co. Inc., and the store is being re-opened as Kansasland Tire, Mr. Wright said.
Auction raises $1,600 for children's charity
HIGH SPRINGS, Fla.-City Boys Tire & Brake raised more than $1,600 July 17 for a local children's cancer charity through a silent auction that included a visit by champion racer Mario Andretti.
Owner Justin Ellison said about 500 people came to the event, at which the dealership auctioned off a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires, a Harley Davidson leather jacket and various other items.
The auction follows other fundraisers the High Springs-based dealership holds each year. Last year the recipients were the American Cancer Society and a local hospice.
One go-cart was left over from the auction; raffle tickets will be sold for it, and the proceeds also will go to the children's charity, Mr. Ellison said.
Mr. Andretti, who often works with Bridgestone/Firestone and its dealers, was a major draw for the event. He signed autographs for two hours, Mr. Ellison added.
Mr. Ellison said the first two fans in line had camped out the night before and were armed with bits of chairs and wood from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Mr. Andretti to sign. They had driven about four hours from Daytona, Fla., he said.
``I don't think anything surprises him,'' Mr. Ellison said of the racing legend.
Tire Kingdom adds four stores to empire
RIVIERA BEACH, Fla.-Tire Kingdom Inc. has added yet more stores to its domain, including its first outlets in Mississippi.
Two stores are in a new market for the Riviera Beach-based retailer. The outlets, in Ocean Springs and in D'Iberville, Miss., are the first for the retail chain in the Gulfport area, said Bob Patron, director of new store operations for Tire Kingdom.
Two other outlets were opened Sept. 8, in Columbus, Ohio, and Augusta, Ga., bringing its store count to 357.
All four stores feature Tire Kingdom's standard design of eight bays and 6,600 square feet, Mr. Patron said.
Tire Kingdom is a subsidiary of Memphis, Tenn.-based TBC Corp.
Plaza Tire teaches vehicle maintenance
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.-It may not be learning how to start a fire with a few twigs or tying intricate knots, but some Webelos Scouts recently learned how to check tire pressure and monitor oil levels thanks to Plaza Tire Service in Cape Girardeau.
The dealership participated in a workshop for local Webelos Scouts looking to earn their ``Handyman'' badges.
Webelos Scouts are boys age 8 to 10 who are a step past Cub Scouts but not yet full Boy Scouts. Ninety-six scouts participated in a week-long day camp where they learned various tasks toward earning badges.
Kevin Seabaugh, a district manager for the retail tire dealership, taught the scouts various points about tire and vehicle maintenance. He also demonstrated how to replace a flat tire with a spare, how to monitor a vehicle's oil level and how to replace headlights and taillights, Plaza Tire said.
Though none of the boys can drive for at least another six years, they all got a free tire pressure gauge.
``There's nothing like the relationship between a boy and his car,'' Mr. Seabaugh said in a statement.
A spokeswoman said the program in July was the first time the company participated in the scouting event. The scouts went on to learn other tasks toward their Handyman badges, she said.
The dealership operates 40 retail and service locations as well as a wholesale division, a quick lube division and a Mighty Auto Parts franchise.
Founded in 1963, Plaza Tire carries primarily Bridgestone, Firestone, Yokohama, Michelin, Continental and Centennial tire brands as well as wheels.
