U.S. replacement shipments in May of medium and heavy truck and bus tires were the only bright spots in the latest Rubber Manufacturers Association monthly tire report.
Shipments of aftermarket medium and heavy truck tires were up 3.3 percent and 28.2 percent, respectively, in May, pushing the year-to-date shipments for these tires ahead of the first five months of 2002.
Shipments in May of passenger and light truck tires, by contrast, lagged behind those of May 2002 in all categories-original equipment, replacement and export-with production down as well.
Replacement passenger tire shipments were down 3.1 percent for the month and 2.3 percent for the year-to- date.
Aftermarket light truck tire shipments in May were down 11 percent, leaving the five-month total 10 percent behind 2002, the RMA figures showed.
